Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #90

Welcome to the 90th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Thou My Everlasting Portion" written by Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915) & composed by Silas J. Vail (1818-1884).
This author is one of the most well known American hymn writers of all time.  Fanny Crosby became blind at the age of 6 weeks from the mistreatment of her eyes during an illness.  She received a good education at the New York Institution for the Blind and later became a music teacher.  She was married in 1858 and didn't begin writing hymns until 1864 (when she was 44 years old!).  Because of her blindness she knew many portions of the Bible by memory!

"But as for me, it is good to be near God.
    I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.
Psalm 73:28

I have included 2 versions of this lovely hymn (below the lyrics).  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 410 in your hymnals and let's sing:

Thou My Everlasting Portion
written by Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915)   composed by Silas J. Vail (1818-1884)

1. Thou my everlasting portion, More than friend or life to me, All along my pilgrim journey, Savior, let me walk with Thee.  Close to Thee, close to Thee, Close to Thee, close to Thee; All along my pilgrim journey, Savior, let me walk with Thee.

2.   Not for ease or worldly pleasure, Not for fame my prayer shall be;  Gladly will I toil and suffer, Only let me walk with Thee.  Close to Thee, close to Thee, Close to Thee, close to Thee;  Gladly will I toil and suffer, Only let me walk with Thee.

3.   Lead me through the vale of shadows, Bear me o'er life's fitful sea;  Then the gate of life eternal, May I enter, Lord with Thee.  Close to Thee, close to Thee, Close to Thee, close to Thee;  Then the gate of life eternal, May I enter, Lord, with Thee.

The Science of Life - DNA

LIFEdna

The Science of Life - DNA

I have never seen so much importance put on "science" until this Pandemic started.  Now don't get me wrong, I think it's great, but it got me thinking about why "science" is almost ignored when it comes to gestational development and the topic of abortion.

Today I am starting a new series where we will study the science of life.  This series will be free of attacks and politicization.  I am going to detail a single part of gestational development in each post in the absolute basic of scientific terms (basic because that is my scientific level).  Which brings me to my disclaimer and details:

1.  I am NOT a doctor and I am NOT giving medical advice or any advice of any kind.  The information below came from my online research.
2.  I will NOT be publishing any comments.  This is an attack free series.
3.  I will be sharing my opinion from my Christian perspective which will appear below the dotted line.  If you do not wish to read my Christian perspective, then simply do NOT scroll past the dotted line - it's that simple.
4.  Sometimes I will include articles that emphasize or enhance the scientific topic of the post.

We will begin by defining the basics as it pertains to DNA:

DNA - short for deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that contains the genetic code of organisms.

Zygote - fertilized egg cell that results from the union of a female gamete (egg, or ovum) with a male gamete (sperm). In the embryonic development of humans and other animals.

Conception - When the single sperm enters the egg, conception occurs. The combined sperm and egg is called a zygote

The zygote contains all of the genetic information (DNA) needed to become a baby.

This DNA is totally different from the mother and totally different from the father - a unique human (no other being will have this DNA makeup).

DNA gives adults their freedom and LIFE back.  From the News
(click on each statement to read the story):

In my opinion, Psalm 139:13-16 proves without a shadow of a doubt that life begins at conception.  "You knit me together in my mother's womb" - can't get much more obvious than that verse.  Or "when I was made in the secret place" - this is conception.
I believe that at conception both the physical and spiritual life begins - our body and our soul.  "Your eyes saw my unformed body" - that is LIFE!!  God knows who we will become, where we will go, what we will do in our life at conception because we are made by Him.  "All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be" - every single second of our life is planned ahead of time by God and that life starts at conception.

If you have had an abortion in the past and are struggling with that decision today, then please know that God will forgive you!

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

"All unrighteousness" covers all sins.  Pray to God, confess your sins to Him and He will forgive you!

Fun Fridays #44 - CHILLY TRICK-OR-TREATING
Happiness and laughter are so good for our health!

This is a series called:  "Fun Fridays".  On the first Friday of every month I will share with you an old photo or something from the recent past that made me happy;  in hopes that it will at least make you smile 😊

Margie_me
I actually don't think this picture was taken while "trick-or-treating" but I can remember many Halloween nights where my costume was totally covered up by a warm coat.  A few nights even had flurries in the air.  Even during inclement weather we continued until our treat sack was full.  This year will be different for many children due to the Pandemic but fun will still be had! (I am the younger girl in the picture above and the older girl is my cousin).
ENJOY!

Wisdom from Heaven #3 - PURE

SundayWisdom3
Wisdom From Heaven #3 - PURE

This is the third post in the series called "Wisdom from Heaven".  In this series we will be studying James chapter 3, which details how to put wisdom into practice in our everyday lives.

Today we are focusing on the first type of heavenly wisdom - PURE.

Let's begin by defining:

pure - spotless, stainless, absolute, refined.  Free from moral fault or guilt.  Marked by chastity.  Free from what violates, weakens or pollutes.

I believe that living a pure life starts with our thoughts.  Does an action follow a thought?  Or does a thought follow an action?  I believe that thoughts come first, which is why it is vital to make sure that our minds are pure.  Read through the passage below:

SundayWisdom3B

You can see how pure thinking will create a good action.  It is impossible to lie, cheat, steal (etc) if you are only thinking about noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy things.

This "pure" wisdom from heaven starts in our minds but what is a pure heart?
A pure heart is mind, action and motive combined.  When our wants and desires are as pure as our thoughts and actions, then that is a pure heart.

It is not an easy feat, but it can be achieved.  We should pray for a pure heart, just like David did in the Psalm below:

SundayWisdom3A

".....love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith."
1 Timothy 1:5

Let's try our best to think, live and desire God's PURE wisdom from heaven everyday.

"Keep yourself pure!"
1 Timothy 5:22

Part #2 - Ring of Fire Sunflower

This is the final sunflower post this year (the tenth year showcasing sunflower varieties grown in my garden).  I have had some difficult sunflower seasons in the past and this year also had some problems.  This is the fourth and final post in the Sunflower Series of 2020 and today I saved the best for last - Part#2 of RING OF FIRE.  Each petal is like a flame in a campfire - just stunningly beautiful.

ENJOY the following pictures!

All photos were taken by me (Angie Ouellette-Tower) and the sunflowers were all grown in my garden.
