Psalm 119 - TAW (Hebrew Alphabet)

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119TAW_zpsdgm2crkx.jpg
TAW - Psalm 119: 169-176

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we complete this series with the twenty-second (final) letter
TAW.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.

TAW - Teach me and Allow your Word to sustain my life.

Today I am going to separate these eight verses into two sections: What David did and how God answered/responded.

Section#1:  David cried, asked, praised, sang, chose, longed, and remembered.

May my cry come before you, Lord (verse 169)

May my supplication come before you, Lord (verse 170)

My lips overflow with praise (verses 171)

Sing of your word (verse 172)

I have chosen your precepts (verse 173)

Longing for salvation (verse 173)

I have not forgotten your commands (verse 176)

Section#2:  God gives, delivers, teaches, helps, strengthens and will never leave.

Give me understanding (verse 169)

Deliver according to your promise (verse 170)

You teach me your decrees (verses 171)

Be ready to help me (verse 173)

Your laws sustain me (verse 175)

Seek your servant (verse 176)

Psalm 119 - SIN & SHIN (Hebrew Alphabet)

SIN & SHIN - Psalm 119: 161-168

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

At first I thought that the twenty-first letter was actually two different letters, but then I did a little research.  "Sin" is the Phoenician (ancient Semitic speaking Mediterranean civilization) version of this letter and "Shin" is traditional Hebrew (although now in modern Hebrew it is called "Shen").  Whether it's truly Sin, Shin or Shen I'm just not sure, but I decided to go with what is listed in my N.I.V. (New International Version) Bible: Sin & Shin.

The theme of today's featured Scripture is Praise.

We will begin by defining:

Praise - express warm approval or admiration of;  glorify, worship, magnify.

I started wondering about the difference between showing appreciation/thanking God and praising God.  The main difference (I believe) is that praise is more of a compliment - an expression of admiration.  Whereas, thankfulness is more being appreciative of what God has done for us.

In verse 164 David talks about praising God seven times a day.  Actually, I found seven different areas where David praised our Lord in today's featured Scripture:  God's Word, God's promise, God's law, God's salvation, God's commands, God's statues and God's precepts.

1.  God's Word (verse 161)

2.  God's promise (verse 162)

3.  God's law (verses 163, 165 & 165)

4.  God's salvation (verse 166)

5.  God's commands (verse 166)

6.  God's statutes (verse 167 & 168)

7.  God's precepts (verse 168)

I encourage you to take up the
7-PRAISE-daily Challenge.

Give our Lord seven compliments a day.  You will be amazed at how easy it is to praise God seven times a day.

Psalm 119 - RESH (Hebrew Alphabet)

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119RESH_zpsuvtd7evp.jpg
RESH - Psalm 119: 153-160

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

RESH.

RESH - Renew my lifE, O Lord, Your compaSsion is never ending like the Heavens

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119RESH2_zpsff8kvegh.jpg

There were five words that stood out in these featured verses:  defend, deliver, redeem, preserve and renew.
Let's begin by defining each word:

Defend - protect from harm or danger, attempt to justify.
Deliver (Deliverance) - the action of being rescued or set free.
Redeem - to compensate for the faults or bad aspects of (someone/something)
Preserve - to keep alive, make lasting.
Renew - to make like new;  restore to freshness, vigor or perfection.

- deliver me from my suffering (verse 153)

- defend my cause, redeem me, renew my life (verse 154)

- renew my life (verse 156)

- preserve my life  (verse 159)

- answer me, Lord (verse 145)

- save me (verse 146)

- renew my life (verse 149)

David then shows the vast difference between those who follow God and those who don't:

- Salvation is far from the wicked (they don't seek God's decrees)
verse 155

- Many are the foes who persecute me (I have not turned from God)
verse 157

- I look on the faithless with loathing (they don't obey God)
verse 158

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119RESH3_zpsqwxqodpx.jpg

O Lord, deliver and redeem us - renew and preserve our lives.

Psalm 119 - QOPH (Hebrew Alphabet)

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119QOPH2_zpshuheiaxg.jpg

In the featured verses that we are focusing on today, we will see how David:
called, cried, stayed awake and rose early in order to pray to God.  Then God answered, saved, and renewed. And finally David's response to God was to obey, keep, hope, meditate and learn.

- I call with all my heart (verse 145)

- I call out to you (verse 146)

- Before dawn, I cry for help (verse 147)

- Through the watches of the night, my eyes stay open (verse 148)

- answer me, Lord (verse 145)

- save me (verse 146)

- renew my life (verse 149)

- I obey your decrees (verse 145)

- I keep your statues (verse 146)

- I have put my hope in your word (verse 147)

- I meditate on your promises (verse 148)

- I learned from your statutes (verse 152)

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119QOPH3_zpss13ok4k9.jpg

Let's not forget that "NO" and "WAIT" could be God's answer to our prayers.  We must accept those answers when they come.

Statute - a law or decree made by a Sovereign or by God.

Righteousness - acting in accord with divine or moral law:  free from guilt or sin.  Justifiable, genuine, excellent.

The featured verses that we are studying today focus on righteousness, right, true, trustworthy.

- God is righteous (verse 137)

God's laws are right (verse 137)

His statutes are righteous (verse 138)

God's statutes are fully trustworthy (verse 138)

God's righteousness is everlasting (verse 142)(see picture above)

His law is true (verse 129)(see picture above)

God's statutes are "forever right" (verse 144) (see picture below)

SundayPsalm119TSADHE3

This week let's strive to be righteous in every aspect of our life by following God's statutes.
