How To Find (& Understand) Answers To Prayer

How To Find (& Understand) Answers To Prayer

I have a couple true prayer stories to share with you before we learn how to find answers to prayer.
A.  My Great Grandmother was a "Prayer Warrior".  During WWII she was able to save her entire family from being blown up by landmines by listening to God through prayer.  (click HERE to read that true story)

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;  in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight"

Proverbs 3: 5&6

B.  The second true prayer story is from my Grandmother.  This also happened during WWII but the moral of this real-life happening has to do with persistence and never giving up in prayer.  My Grandmother was separated from her parents for weeks & weeks - she could not rely on mail, instead she had to rely on prayer.  (click HERE to read how she was reunited with her parents).

"Pray continually"
1 Thessalonians 5:17

"Seek and you will find"
Matthew 7:7

The following are 8 ways to find and understand God's answers to our prayers:

SundayPRAYER1

There have been many times when I have been praying intently and decide to read my Bible.  I'll take my Bible in hand and just open it without looking for any certain verse or book and then I'll read wherever my eyes land  - and lo & behold that place where my eyes landed is the answer to my prayer!!  This has happened a few times but most of the time I need to meditate on God's word  - a little bit each day before finding an answer.

SundayPRAYER2

This is that "gut feeling" found deep down in our being.  You might find yourself at a crossroads in your life and pray about what direction to turn.  You decide upon a pathway but when you start down that road you get a very uneasy feeling that can't be ignored - this is the kind of urging that I'm talking about - this is the Holy Spirit telling you that you've made the wrong decision.  When something like this happens - STOP and PRAY some more before you turn around and go back the way you came.  (This "pathway", of course, is a symbol for whatever it is that you're praying for - it might be guidance on a job or decision on where to move etc).

SundayPRAYER3

After praying about a certain concern or question - go to your clergy, family member, friend and ask their opinion.  Sometimes God might even send you an answer through a neighbor or even a stranger.

SundayPRAYER4

"Quiet time" can be different for all of us - it might be sitting on a beach watching the waves, or sitting in your house watching the traffic go by or maybe a walk around the neighborhood at night with nobody else around.  During these "quiet times" you are not praying but just listening - God might pop an idea in your head or even speak to you through your thoughts.  Try it - you might be surprised at the result!

SundayPRAYER5

This verse talks more about judging others but the other point of this verse is to clear up your own sin and change your ways.  Sin is blinding - you can pray and seek until you are blue in the face but if there is still an area of sin in your life then you won't be able to see or hear what God is telling you.  Clean up your life first.

SundayPRAYER6

God's thoughts & ways are not the same as ours and His timing is also different.  We might feel that we need the answer right away or else.......or else what?  What if you are waiting to hear if your loan went through to be able to buy that dream house - you wait so long and eventually lose that house to a different buyer.  Maybe through that wait and loss God was saying that you were not supposed to buy that house.  God's timing is the only clock by which to live.

SundayPRAYER7

We might not understand why the answer is "no" at the time - but later (maybe even years later) - something will happen and then you'll say to yourself: "That's why the answer was 'no' ".  God knows better than we do - just trust Him.

SundayPRAYER8

This verse, of course, is talking about drifting away from our Christian walk but I also believe that it applies here.  When we are waiting for an answer to prayer, we must pay attention to everything until we receive that answer.  It might take longer than we are comfortable with but there is a reason even for that wait.

pray Pray PRAY everyday & everywhere!

Worship Wednesdays #21 - GOD WILL RESCUE YOU
This is the twenty-first post in a series called "Worship Wednesdays".  In this series I will focus on one word, thought or lesson and I will feature a modern Christian song that relates to the focus of the day.
Click HERE to read the post from last month:
HOLY WATER

Let's begin by defining WORSHIP - the feeling or expression of adoration for a deity.  Adoration, love, devotion, adulation, glorify, exalt, praise.

There are many ways to worship God but in this series it will be through music.

“Seven times a day I praise you.”

Psalm 119:164

Psalm 119 - GIMEL (Hebrew Alphabet)

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119Gimel_zpsq2k7y1jt.jpg
GIMEL - Psalm 119:17-24

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we continue studying with the third letter GIMEL.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.
Example below.

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119_zpszhagaoxw.jpg

GIMEL - Give me Insight;  open my eyes to learn Your Law.

Last week we focused on memorizing Scripture but what's the point of memorizing any Bible verse if you don't understand the meaning?  Our focus today is on "Insight." It's a word not used often in everyday life, so let's take the time to define this word (taken from various online dictionaries):
Insight - the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or seeing intuitively.  Discernment, perception, perceptiveness, wisdom.

This kind of "insight" comes from God.  Knowing Bible verses inside and out and being able to recite them in applicable situations.  Maybe not even reciting the verses word for word but applying the meaning to our actions and our everyday life.  This is the ultimate proof that the meaning of Scripture read has been understood - by putting God's Word into action.

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundayPsalm119GIMEL2_zpsvqh85baj.jpg

This is why I recommend praying to God before you read the Bible - ask Him for understanding - ask Him to show you what He wants you to learn.

The word that jumped out at me in the verse above is "consume" - I thought it would be interesting to define that word also:
Consume - to enjoy avidly, to engage fully, to devour.

Let us devour God's Word everyday of our life!

Becoming a Christian Soldier - PRAYER

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo SundaySoldierPRAYER_zps1cyoq7td.jpg
Becoming a Christian Soldier - PRAYER
Today we continue learning about "Becoming A Christian Soldier" and learning how to "put on the full armor of God" (Ephesians 6:11) - Now, I have to be very clear - I am NOT talking about becoming a physical soldier and I am NOT saying that you should go out and physically fight (although I appreciate and respect anybody who has served or is serving in our army, navy or air force).  What I'm talking about in this series is on a spiritual level.  If you look at Ephesians, chapter 6 verse 12: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood..." that is the exact point - we are not talking about a physical fight and we are not talking about physical training.  Becoming a Christian soldier is all about our relationship with God;  about our spiritual training and about our spiritual self.

A few months ago we learned about who our enemy is and then most recently we learned about the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT.

Click HERE to read "SWORD OF THE SPIRIT"

Our God is all powerful, all knowing, He is our Protector and Provider - He would never throw us into a battle without fully equipping us first.  Today we continue learning about the "full armor of God" and specifically "Prayer.

It is interesting to me that there is an order to the verses in Ephesians chapter 6 - first we must prepare, train and draw from God's power "after you have done everything" - verse 13 ) and then we must STAND.  It's not all about the preparation, eventually we must "do" or "act" - we must implement what we learned in our training.

This spiritual weapon "Prayer" is both a defensive and an offensive weapon.  Not only does prayer protect us against the evil coming towards us but prayer also helps and protects other people around us from Satan's schemes.  All we have to do is put it into practice and use this prayer weapon on a daily basis.

As you can see by the highlighted verse above we must "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."  That means that we can pray any time of the day, any season of the year, we can pray in any place or in any situation.  "All kinds of prayers & requests" means that we can pray for everything - nothing is too small or too large.  That means both extremes and everything in between - you can pray for healing of a hangnail or healing from cancer.  Large and small and everything in between.  Also, pray anytime and anyplace.

Did you know that there is a chronology to the way that we should pray?  Throughout the day I often pray little prayers like "thank you for the rain" or "show me the way" or "help that person with their unruly child" - anything that I see throughout the day.  However, when I kneel down to pray and spend some quality time with God - then I use this order/format:
1. Worship - praise God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
2. Repent and ask forgiveness for any and every sin that you have committed
3. Appreciation - thank God for all that He has done for you and/or is currently doing for you
4. Ask - the last thing is the list of requests.  For this step I always try to pray for all of those around me (family, friends, neighbors, strangers, worldly figures etc) before getting to the personal "I need" or "I want"

"With this in mind be alert" - Just as important as requesting and asking is being alert to hear God's response.

"Be still and know that I am God"
Psalm 46:10

How could we ever hear anything if we are constantly talking? - The other part of prayer is being quiet, listening and then doing whatever it is that God tells us to do through the Holy Spirit's urging.  Keep in mind that the answer might be "no" or "stay where you are" or "continue on the same path" - we must put our selfish desires aside and do what God is urging and guiding us to do.  Also, being alert prevents an attack from the evil one - being alert protects us from deceivers and false prophets.

Prayer is so amazing!!! - Do you have any idea how powerful and awesome this Spiritual weapon is???  All you have to do is think your prayer! - say it in your mind & God will hear you.  It does not have to be verbal or said out loud - prayer is an internal and personal thing just between you and your Maker.  And, other people in your life don't ever have to know that you are praying for them!  Sit back and watch what God is doing in their life all the while knowing that you had some part in that because of your diligent prayers.  Now again, I have to be clear - we must NEVER become arrogant and think that we are the reason for some good in someone's life.  Yes, we might have prayed for that person but God is the one who does the miraculous works.  We as Christians are just God's vessel - God working through us and God getting all the glory.

Please pray continually in all situations, anytime of the day, anywhere in the world and for anyone!
Prayer is the ultimate Spiritual Weapon!!

Thankful Praying

The following is a thankful account of an answer to prayer and it is told by "Debbi"  who is a member of the google+ group called: "Prayer Warriors United" (click HERE if you are interested in joining or if you need prayer).

So often we neglect to thank God for answering our prayers  and we even neglect being thankful in our prayer requests.

".........but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."
Philippians 4:6

"I have a wonderful testimony to give about the power of prayer....and why this community is so important.  Last year I had asked for prayer for my daughter who was having emergency surgery because of Chrone's disease.  After a year of close monitoring, an ostomy bag, daily iv's to keep her hydrated, and daily shots of a new medication....2 weeks ago the doctors reattached her colon and removed the bag.  Last week at her follow up appointment, the doctors were so pleased with her recovery they removed her pic-line (no more iv drips) and stopped the shots.  Now she is eating well, and only taking one medication for prevention.  Thank you all here who took the time and effort to lift her up in your prayers."

The Importance of Prayer - GUIDANCE

for godsgrowinggarden.com by Angie Ouellette-Tower photo SundayGarden_zps7ded592d.jpg

The Importance of Prayer - G U I D A N C E
The featured Bible passage today is Isaiah 58:11 - "The Lord will GUIDE you always".
Let's look that word up in the dictionary:
Guidance - "help or advice that tells you what to do:  the act or process of guiding someone" (Merriam-Webster).

"The Lord will guide you always, he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.  You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail."  Isaiah 58:11
I know that when I am in need of guidance or advice on a problem or even if I'm at a positive crossroads;  I always seek God's direction through prayer.  I've found that God answers in two main ways:

1.  Through the urgings of His Holy Spirit  - These urgings/feelings/thoughts might not come at the time when you are praying (although sometimes it might happen right away) but rather these urgings/feelings/thoughts might happen later when you are going about your daily chores or maybe even during a crisis.  However, diligent prayer will open up your heart to hear and pay attention to those urgings even if they happen many hours or days after prayer.

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own;  he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come."  John 16:13

2.  Through those around us or through situations - God places people in our lives not always for us to witness or minister to them but sometimes God might be working through them as an answer to our prayer.  Or, God might place us in a situation that will give us the answer that we've been searching for.

Important note:  patience is the most important part of searching for guidance through prayer.  You can't expect to be given the answer immediately (although that's a possibility - just don't expect it) - God is our God for ever & will never give up on us, so we can NEVER give up on Him or give up on searching out His will for our lives.

"For this God is our God for ever and ever;  He will be our guide even to the end."  Psalm 48:14
