Planting Potatoes in a Compost Pile - THE RESULTS

Planting Potatoes in a Compost Pile - THE RESULTS

A while back I shared with you tips on "Preparing Seed Potatoes for Planting" and instructions on how to "Plant Potatoes in a Compost Pile."  Well, the results are in and IT WORKED!!!  They vary in size - some are good for a small baked potato and others are wonderful boiled but nothing tastes as delicious as homegrown.

How to harvest Potatoes:  You can see the progression in the pictures above.  The plants must be light brown in color and the stem should look dry before harvesting.  First, using a potato pitch fork, dig about 6 inches away from the brown plant.  Then gently push back on the handle of the pitch fork (therefore lifting the potatoes out of the soil/compost).  And, the last step is the most fun - I get down on my hands and knees and dig for the delicious fresh treasure.  Dust off the dirt and ENJOY!!

  1. Looks like you got a pretty good harvest. My dad used to grow potatoes. I loved the new potatoes when he would dig a few of those.

  2. Wow! Those look so amazing. We're growing potatoes here at my house as well, but they don't look as good as yours, lol. Our are so tiny :/

  3. What great results! We learned recently that we can germinate seeds in our vermicomposte. We can't wait to try it this fall.

  4. I planted potatoes this year in a "box" made of 4 pallets lined w/ plastic and filled halfway w/ topsoil. (We live in TN and have hard red clay and tree roots from hell)I planned to keep filling it w/ dirt as they emerged until it got to the top..but that part didn't happen. But we still got potatoes! Home grown potatoes are so creamy and good compared to store bought. Yours look yummy! I made a 3 sided pallet "box" for my compost right next to my potato box..I guess I should just fork that right in there next year!
