Stubbornness Series - Part#1 Introduction

I come from a long line of stubborn descendants - stubbornness runs on both my French Canadian & German side.  I was thinking about my ancestors and then started to wonder about stubbornness in the Bible.  Maybe being stubborn can sometimes be a good thing?  Is it always negative?  Once a month on this blog we will study the people of the Old & New Testament in relation to stubbornness.  I'm not sure how long this series last be but it will certainly be a fun topic to study.

Today I want to define stubborn.  The word "stubborn" does not appear in the Bible (at least not in the NIV version & at least not in my concordance).  So, then I used adjectives and that's when I found the verse above using the word "obstinate".  I think this verse is very fitting and this is the best description for
stubborn - pursuing ones own imaginations.

To me there are two sides to "stubborn" - a good and bad side.

Stubborn can only be good if we are following God's will for our life - the adjectives for this positive type of stubbornness are:  persistent, determined, persevering and tenacious

When we do our own thing and follow our "own imaginations" which are against God's will then this negative type of stubborn is: pigheaded, obstinate, inflexible & willful.

Over the next few months let's pay attention to our own display of stubbornness - are we persevering to glorify God? or are we being pigheaded while running away from our Lord?

  1. Our Torah study yesterday was on G-d hardening Pharoah's heart and not letting his people go. Since we all have free will, we can harden our own hearts against people and situations. If we ask for G-d's help, it's the best way to go.
