Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing#18

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's feature song is "Lead Me to Calvary"  written by Jennie Evelyn Hussey (1874-1958) & composed by William J. Kirkpatrick (1838-1921).  Jennie Hussey was a caregiver to her "invalid" sister for most of her adult life and this is the "cross" that she wrote about in this hymn.  Specifically in verse 4 where she wrote: "May I be willing, Lord, to bear daily my cross for Thee."  Jennie tried to be joyful in every situation and dealt with the difficulties by writing poetry.
Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

Below the lyrics I have included two YouTube Videos of this wonderful hymn.  They are both rustic versions of this song.  In the first video, the choir is being dismissed while this hymn is being sung.  The second video is preformed by 3 sisters all playing the violin (this video looks like it was taken in secret - it goes in & out of focus - but the girls are very talented!) - please take time to listen.

Turn with me to number 143 in your hymnals and let's sing:
Lead Me to Calvary
by Jennie Evelyn Hussey, (1874-1958) composed by William J. Kirkpatrick,(1838-1921)
1. King of my life, I crown Thee now, Thine shall the glory be;  Lest I forget Thy thorn-crowned brow, Lead me to Calvary.
CHORUS
2.   Show me the tomb where Thou wast laid, Tenderly mourned and wept;  Angels in robes of light arrayed Guarded Thee whilst Thou slept.
CHORUS
3.  Let me like Mary, through the gloom, Come with a gift to Thee;  Show to me now the empty tomb, Lead me to Calvary..
CHORUS

4.  May I be willing, Lord, to bear Daily my cross for Thee;  Even Thy cup of grief to share, Thou hast borne all for me.
CHORUS

Chorus
Lest I forget Gethsemane;  Lest I forget Thine agony;
Lest I forget Thy love for me, Lead me to Calvary.

  1. Twice a year our church has a Sunday evening service that is just to sign the old hymns. Young people don't know the old standards, like "The Old Rugged Cross" and so many others that we all grew up singing. We have to make sure that they don't fade away all together. Thanks for sharing the joyful sounds!

  2. This is such a blessing. I really enjoyed singing along and taking the time to reflect on what Christ did for us on the Cross. Thanks for sharing.
