Obedience Series #3 - Obeying God with Your Body

Obeying God with Your Body

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own;  you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body."
1 Corinthians 6:19 & 20

As Christians our earthly bodies are not our own but God's.  We need to obey God with our mortal bodies:

1.  Be careful about what you allow into your body
This is very vague but as an example, you should think about what you eat, drink and breath.  Some Christians do not have a problem with drinking alcohol but to the point of drunkenness? - That can never be an acceptable environment for the Holy Spirit's temple.  Smoking and even overeating are in the same category - not an appropriate situation for hosting the Holy Spirit.  Maybe you frequent local bars to witness to other people but what kind of a witness will it be if you are acting exactly the way that non-Christians act? - How is that showing them that they need Christ?
Next time think before you eat & drink.

2.  Think about what you put onto your body
What type of clothing do you wear?  Let's use that same example that I used above.  So, you frequent local bars to witness to others in hopes of bringing people to Christ.  Are you wearing provocative clothing to attract others? - How does that glorify God?
What about tattoos & piercings?  When I was a young teenager I got my ears pierced but to be perfectly honest with you that does bother me today - Was I obeying God with my body by piercing my ears?
We could even talk about makeup and nail art? - this example might be a bad choice for your own body and maybe those chemicals that you place onto your skin might be making you ill?  How is that taking care of your body/God's temple?
Be careful about everything that you put onto your body.

3.  Be cautious about where you place your body
The most important thing when talking about where you place your body or where you go is to make sure that it is God's will for your life.  There will be many situations that might be dangerous or scary but if God wants you there, then He will protect you.  However, (using the same example as above) - if you are constantly going to bars to "witness" to others but if you are acting & dressing like everyone else, then you might be putting yourself into a dangerous situation that actually has absolutely nothing to do with glorifying God!
Before you decide to place your body/God's temple somewhere - make sure that it is part of God's plan for your life.

"In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.  Therefore do not let sin  reign in your mortal body so  that you obey its evil desires.  Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life;  and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness.  For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace."  Romans 6:11-14

  1. Such truths Sandra. Trying to be so much more careful what I put in my body and what I don't put in it and how I exercise this body. Visiting from Saturday Soiree.

  2. Both good points. I'm a diabetic so I need to be aware of what I eat. Sometimes I get tired of it -- thinking of what to eat for six meals, trying to keep away from sweets, etc. But others have disease so much worse. Thank you for this reminder.
