Fall Ornaments Using Old Canning Lids
#recycle #reuse #repurpose

At the end of every canning season I have accumulated a pile of rusty old canning lids that I rejected while preserving my garden produce.  I set them aside hoping that I will figure out a different way to use them (since they are no longer usable for canning).
This year, an alternative use for these lids popped into my head! (I often have ideas just pop into my head).  I decided to make double sided Fall ornaments.  These were fashioned with designs that could be used for Halloween or for Thanksgiving.  I waited until my 13 year old nieces visited and we crafted these cute decorations together.

Items needed:
- old rusty canning lids
- scrapbook paper (various colors and patterns)
- glue gun and glue sticks
- ribbon
- scissors, exacto knife, scrapbooking shape stamps, puff paint (optional)

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo unnamed 28_zpswff7a2xl.jpg

Anything goes - there is no wrong way to make these decorations.  Begin by placing a round cutout that fits inside the canning ring.  With a larger round paper cutout & using an exacto knife,  cut faces or shapes and place that piece of paper on the outer edge of the ring to create depth resembling a jack-o-lantern (see the beginning of a black cat in the picture above).

On the other side of that ring you can create a different face or decorative patterns making it a double-sided ornament. (see the ornament below shows both sides of one canning ring).
And then finally add a ribbon around the edge of the lid/ring with enough extra ribbon for a loop to hang the ornament (again, see picture below)

You may also create Thanksgiving type patterns and designs (see picture below)

Christian Camp Songs & Chorus Hymns #32

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for godsgrowinggarden.com photo 2014-10-25_zpsrapqkqpo-1.jpg

Christian Camp Songs & Chorus Hymns #32

I spent many years in my late teens and early twenties working at Christian Camps.  I even met my husband at a Christian camp.  These wonderful memories of great experiences make Christian camp songs very special to me.

On top of featuring an old hymn each month in what I call "Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing" - I will also be featuring a chorus hymn every month - ENJOY!
Today's featured song is "This is the Day" - by Les Garrett (1967).

"This is the day which the Lord hath made;  we will rejoice and be glad in it."  Psalm 118:24

I have included a YouTube video of this wonderful song (see below the lyrics)
ENJOY!
This is the Day
Les Garrett

This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made.
I will rejoice, I will rejoice and be glad in it, and be glad in it.
This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made.

A special thanks to "itzamar10" for sharing this with us on YouTube

Apple Walnut Coffee Cake RECIPE

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo DSCF9739_zps3dstwxyy.jpg

Apple Walnut Coffee Cake

The coffee cake is such an easy cake to make but it is so versatile.  It can be eaten with coffee for breakfast, in the afternoon at "kafee und kuchen" time (German coffee and cake at 4pm in the afternoon), as dessert after dinner or simply as a snack.

My recipe has a very subtle and delicate maple flavor.  I add Maple Cream (see picture below) to the batter but this extra flavor is not strong enough for the word "maple" to appear in the title.  This Maple Cream ingredient may be omitted from the recipe.

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo 2018-10-24_zps5qqckszb.jpg

Cake
2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
3 tablespoons maple cream
1/3 cup butter
1 cup milk
1 apple (washed, peeled, cored and sliced finely)
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg

With an electric mixer - combine the sugar, butter, maple cream and milk - beat until creamy smooth.  Add the egg and mix on low until combined.  Now add in the flour, baking powder, salt & cinnamon - stir with a wooden spoon until combined.  Finally, with a wooden spoon,  stir in the chopped apple (see picture above).  Set batter aside and make the streusel.

Streusel
1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

In a separate bowl stir the flour, sugar and cinnamon until mixed.  With a pie cutter blend the butter into the dry ingredients.  Now stir in the nuts (I just use my bare hands to mix the nuts into the streusel but you may use a wooden spoon).

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo DSCF9731_zps1ry9k0nd.jpg

Assembly:  In a sprayed/buttered square Pyrex pan - add half of the cake dough and then dot with half of the streusel.  Then repeat with the second portions of each (see picture below on the left).  Bake in a preheated 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes (or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean).

Allow to cool on a wire rack for about 10 minutes.

Slice, serve & ENJOY!
