GIMEL - Psalm 119:17-24

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we continue studying with the third letter GIMEL.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.
Example below.

GIMEL - Give me Insight;  open my eyes to learn Your Law.

Last week we focused on memorizing Scripture but what's the point of memorizing any Bible verse if you don't understand the meaning?  Our focus today is on "Insight." It's a word not used often in everyday life, so let's take the time to define this word (taken from various online dictionaries):
Insight - the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or seeing intuitively.  Discernment, perception, perceptiveness, wisdom.

This kind of "insight" comes from God.  Knowing Bible verses inside and out and being able to recite them in applicable situations.  Maybe not even reciting the verses word for word but applying the meaning to our actions and our everyday life.  This is the ultimate proof that the meaning of Scripture read has been understood - by putting God's Word into action.

This is why I recommend praying to God before you read the Bible - ask Him for understanding - ask Him to show you what He wants you to learn.

The word that jumped out at me in the verse above is "consume" - I thought it would be interesting to define that word also:
Consume - to enjoy avidly, to engage fully, to devour.

Let us devour God's Word everyday of our life!

  3. Your blog provides clarity and *insight* to questions Ive had and ones i didnt know i had whilst searching for who or what god is. I’m honest in saying ive had this feeling of God being that which cannot be described but growing up Christian and in a dominantly Christian society i have a sort of mental image of a powerful male being overlooking the universe and his creation. I think this is a warped concept to hold and it just separates me further from the truth . Because of that ive been searching, asking questions and being put in spaces that challenge my thinking. The humanness in me feels an insatiable curiosity to know what the creator looks like, the consciousness in me knows God is everything that is. I started praying again and ive been blessed beyond belief. I long for a true deep relationship with the divine, with source. I will continue to ask for insight and clarity wherever i feel conflicted as it takes me closer to the truth. Thank you for the work you do, Love to every one
