TREES#4 - Olives

SundayTrees4C

TREES #4 - Olives

We continue to learn more about trees in this series.  This is Part#4 on God's glorious trees - "Olives".    Today we are focusing on the olive tree which really is a sacred tree with immense uses both practical and spiritual.

Olive trees live between 300 to 500 years!  However, in the Mediterranean climate a healthy olive tree can live over 1,000 years!!  I am reminded of a verse in Isaiah talking about how long we will live during "1,000 years of peace":

"Unlike the past, invaders will not take their houses and confiscate their vineyards. For my people will live as long as trees, and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard-won gains."
Isaiah 65:22

Almost every part of the olive tree is beneficial:
- fruit (olives) as a healthy food
- oil (olive oil is a good "fat"- very healthy for almost every ailment, unlike other vegetable oils that are detrimental to your health)
- the wood is used for furniture and other fine building (the grain and color are beautiful)
- the leaf is made into a supplement that is said to boost immune system
- even the pits are used as fuel
- also, the oil is not just food, it is used in a spiritual capacity as anointing oil (see Scripture passage below)

SundayTree4D

We see that the olive branch was the first sign of new life after the flood (when Noah sent out a dove):

The "Mount of Olives" is very significant when it comes to Jesus (Please read Zechariah 14:3-11).  And specifically this verse below:

"And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,"
Zechariah 14:4

Let's not forget about the Garden of Gethsemane (which happened to be on the Mount of Olives).  The word "Gethsemane" supposedly means "oil press" which implies that this garden was actually an olive grove.  If you recall, this garden is where Jesus prayed asking if He could be spared from what was to come.  Gethsemane was also where he was betrayed and arrested (read Matthew 26:36-56)

Let's strive to be like a green olive tree trusting in God forever & ever!

Essential Oil Saturdays#6 - How Are They Extracted?
This is the sixth post in my series on Essential Oils.  Today we are focusing on "How Essential Oils are Extracted" from plants.
I am going to explain this as simply as possible and I will not go into great detail (mainly because I am NOT a chemist and I do not understand the details - lol).
As we have learned in previous posts: an essential oil is the aromatic liquid that is found within certain flowers, leaves, trees, seeds and roots.
Essential oils are totally different from cooking oils like "olive oil."  Olive oil is squeezed out of the olives by compressing slowly on the olives, whereas essential oils are extracted through steam distillation.  This process requires gigantic amounts of plant parts to extract small amounts of essential oils.  As an example it takes about 5,000 pounds of fresh rose petals (do you realize how light weight a rose petal is?) to produce 1 kilo of essential rose oil.

"Young living Essential Oils" prides themselves on the highest quality extraction process - it is called "SEED to Seal" (click HERE to read more about their "quality commitment")

Essential Oil Saturdays#5 - Bliblical History: Holy Anointing Oil

Essential Oil Saturdays#5 - Biblical History: Holy Anointing Oil
This is the fifth post in my series on Essential Oils.  Today we are focusing on "Essential Oil History" and specifically "Biblical Holy Anointing Oil."
There are hundreds of references in the Bible about incense, oils, aromatics &/or ointments.  Historically, essential oils were used not just as perfume but mainly for anointing and in so doing either for healing or for sacred purposes.
Today we are going to focus on the Holy Anointing Oil that was give to Moses in Exodus:
"Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Take the following fine spices: 500 shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels of fragrant calamus, 500 shekels of cassia - all according to the sanctuary shekel - and a hin of olive oil.  Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer.  It will be the sacred anointing oil.  Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law, the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand.  You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy.  Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.  Say to the Israelites, this is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come.' "  Exodus 30:22-31

"Five hundred shekels" is equivalent to 1 gallon in modern terms and a "hin" is about 1.25 gallons.  Most of the prayer/baptism/anointing oils that can be purchased today still contain many of these ingredients like: myrrh and cinnamon.

Essential Oil Saturdays#4 - Single vs Blends

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for http://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo EOSlarge_zpsgcdvsnfs.jpg

Essential Oil Saturdays#4 - Single vs Blends

This is the fourth post in my series on Essential Oils.  Today we are focusing on the difference between a single oils and blends.

Single
Single oils are just that - an isolated oil from one source type: extracted from one flower variety or one specific herb/plant variety.  (I want to be clear, by using the word "one" I am NOT suggesting that an entire bottle of oil comes from one flower - I mean one type/variety of flower/plant).  Single oils are used when you can narrow down your benefit goal to a specific problem.  Each oil has it's own list of possible benefits (which we will feature in future posts).  Click HERE to view over 80 single essential oils available from Young Living.
Blends
This too is obvious - "Blends" are a mixture of single essential oils.  You can either mix your own or purchase special blends from Young Living like: "Thieves" or "PanAway" (and many more - click HERE to view some Blends).  The benefit goal is more vague with essential oil blends because they cover a wider range of possible benefits.

Essential Oil Saturdays#3 - Application Methods

This is the third post in my series on Essential Oils.  Today we will be talking about three different ways to use (apply) essential oils (these are general terms/methods and specific Essential Oil benefits and uses will be detailed/featured in future posts):

Topical
This method includes applying directly on the skin (single oils or diluted), through such items as bath salts, massage oils, lotions, compresses, ointments etc.)

Oral/Dietary
Certain essential oils can be used internally (CAUTION - Not all essential oils are orally safe).  This method of essential oil application can be taken through a beverage with a beneficial intent or just as flavoring in baking or cooking.

Aromatic
This method is through our olfactory system (through our nose - sense of smell - breathing).  Last week we talked about the Diffuser (click HERE to view that post).  If you do not own a diffuser you can still use essential oils aromatically - placing a few drops on a cloth and placing over a heat register or just a dab under your nose (details of such usage will be featured in future posts).

Essential Oil Saturdays #2 - Aromatherapy Diffuser

Essential Oil Saturdays#2 - Aromatherapy Diffuser

Aromatherapy is defined as the "use of aroma to enhance a feeling of well-being." (Mirriam-Webster).
I'm sure that we can all think of a specific scent that creates a positive emotion or has created a wonderful memory.  Imagine smelling a fresh rose in your garden or maybe it's the smell of the sea that lifts up your spirit.  This is the theory of aroma creating a healthy way of living.
Many people believe that aromatherapy can clean the air and therefore:
- reducing headaches
- boost energy while easing anxiety/depression
- strengthen the immune system
- increase memory
- reduce pain
- and much more.........

A diffuser is an electrical tool that disperses essential oils into the air.  It is almost like a super fine mist or fog of aromatherapy.

I will try to include a Bible verse each week - one that applies to the topic of the day.  This verse below talks about fragrance and mood.  Granted, music had something to do with this "gladness" but I believe it is the fragrance that brought about the joy.
"All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;  from places adorned with ivory
the music of the strings makes you glad."
