TREES#5 - Mustard, Faith & Mulberry

SundayTree5

TREES #5 - Mustard, Faith & Mulberry

In today's continuation of the trees series we will be focusing on two parables about the Mustard tree.  This is Part#5 on God's glorious trees - "Mustard, Faith & Mulberry".

First, here are a few interesting facts about the "Mustard tree":
- mustard seeds are small but not the smallest (basil seeds are much smaller)
- it can grow between 6 feet and 20 feet tall!!
- 50% of the world's mustard crop is grown in Canada of all places!!! (I always thought mustard enjoyed very hot temperatures).
- mustard is healthy - it has anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties (again - I am NOT a doctor - read my disclaimer below).

The first parable that we are studying is "Faith and the Mustard Seed." (we will be looking at this exact parable in the books of Matthew and Luke).
In the Bible verse below we see the comparison of our faith/Christian walk compared to a tiny mustard seed.  It only takes that little spark of faith to move mountains!!  NOTHING is impossible with Jesus Christ! (Luke 1:37)

"So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."
Matthew 17:20

I believe that it is even more of a miracle to uproot a mulberry tree than to move mountains with our faith (you will see why in a moment).  In Luke it uses the analogy of our tiny bit of faith being able to uproot mulberry trees.

SundayTree5B

In the collage below your will see how large a "mulberry bush" can grow (it is actually a tree, not sure why it is referred to as a bush).  The root system is crazy strong and wraps itself around the roots of neighboring trees.  It is absolutely impossible to totally rid the garden of these trees.

SundayTree5A

The second parable compares the growth of the mustard seed to the Kingdom of God.  This parable is detailed in 3 of the 4 Gospels:
Matthew 13:31-35
Luke 13:18-19
Mark 4:30-34

The Kingdom of God begins with just a tiny seed of faith and grows into a huge beneficial tree that can not be ignored and can not be hidden.  This tree (Kingdom of God) is a place of abundance, peace and life for the "birds that nest under its shade".

SundayTreeC

It only takes a tiny spark of faith in Jesus Christ to uproot the most stubborn of  pesky plants.

Fungi Fascination - Homegrown for 3 Years

Fungi Fascination - Homegrown for 3 Years

Over the past 3 years we have been growing our own edible mushrooms and it has been fascinating!  A few are grown outside but most edible varieties were grown in a controlled temperature & humidity tent inside the house (see list below).

I previously showcased 10 varieties that I grew over the past 3 years (featured below):
Shiitake
Snow Oyster
Pink Oyster
Black King Oyster
Morel (wild, grown outside)
Golden Oyster
Lion's Mane
Wine Cap (grown outside)
Italian Oyster
Blue Oyster

(If you want to grow your own mushrooms click HERE for mushroom supplies )

SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS

Probably my favorite homegrown variety, maybe tied with Morels.

2023-2-015

SNOW OYSTER MUSHROOMS

This variety prefers a cooler environment and they are very prolific.

2022-1-004(1)

PINK OYSTER MUSHROOMS

A much warmer climate is necessary for this variety to fully grow to an edible size.  These mushrooms keep "flushing" over and over again (A "flush" is a new crop).

2022-1-3

BLACK KING OYSTER MUSHROOMS

This variety was a little more difficult to get successive crops, but they were very meaty.

2023-1-4

MOREL MUSHROOMS

These mushrooms grow wild outside usually in early May.

2021-10-012(1)

GOLDEN OYSTER MUSHROOMS

Another variety that prefers warm temperatures.

2022-2-029

LION'S MANE MUSHROOMS

This mushroom is probably the most important of all varieties detailed today because it is medicinal as well as culinary.

2022-1-006

WINE CAP MUSHROOMS

With this variety, a successful crop did not happen until the second year (grown outside).  However, the taste is very nutty and the crop seems to get larger every year.

2022-6-9

ITALIAN OYSTER MUSHROOMS

This variety is the largest of the oyster mushrooms that I grew.

2022-2-030

BLUE OYSTER MUSHROOMS

These mushrooms are the easiest to grow and they are also the most meaty of these featured varieties.

2022-1-005(1)

Then, there are various wild mushrooms that I have come across in the yard over the past few decades

ENJOY!
