Many Mini Marvels - Garden Greats 2023

Many Mini Marvels - Garden Greats 2023

Garden season 2023 is over and now as I look back at my summer photos, I noticed that there were many mini marvels captured on film.

I then realized the importance of small things.

"Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires."
James 3:4

We'll begin with baby corn.

This was our first year growing the
"Teaspoon Tomato":

And then I found a mini mushroom (it is not one that I was familiar with but it was so very cute).

The remaining "minis" are all insects:

There was an amazing Praying Mantis (my favorite insect - it's also so beneficial because they eat other pest insects that eat my garden).

I was able to capture (on camera) two unique types of spiders:

The remaining insects I'm not sure their identities.

Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #123

Welcome to the 123rd Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "True Hearted, Whole Hearted" written by Frances R. Havergal (1836-1879) & composed by George C. Stebbins (1846-1945).  The author of this hymn never married but she was highly educated.  She knew two other languages (Greek & Hebrew).  She was also very humble and did not consider herself a poet - she said that she simply:
"sang the love of God, and His way of salvation."

" 'And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.”

Mark 12:30

I have included 2 videos below the lyrics.
Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 327 in your hymnals and let's sing:

True Hearted, Whole Hearted
written by Frances R Havergal (1836-1879) composed by George C Stebbins (1846-1945)

1. True-hearted, whole-hearted, faithful and loyal, King of our lives by Thy grace we will be;  Under the standard exalted and royal Strong in Thy strength we will battle for Thee.

CHORUS

2.   True-hearted, whole-hearted, fullest allegiance, Yielding hence forth to our glorious King;  Valiant endeavor and loving obedience Freely and joyously now we would bring.

CHORUS

3.   True-hearted, whole-hearted, Savior all glorious!  Take Thy great power and reign there alone.  Over our wills and affections victorious, Freely surrendered and wholly Thine own.

 CHORUS

Chorus

Peal out the watch-word!  Silence it never,

Song of our spirits rejoicing and free;  Peal out the watchword!

loyal forever, King of our lives, by Thy grace we will be.

A special thanks to "John Rogers acapella Gospel Hymns" for sharing this with us!

Year #2 - BABY CORN: Knowing When To Harvest

2023-10-04

Year#2 - BABY CORN: Knowing When To Harvest

Last year was the first year trying to grow baby corn.  I was planning on pickling them to put in my stir-fries or just as a side.  Well, I didn't know when to harvest them and I let the kernels fully develop.  However, that turned out to be a pleasant surprise because fully grown baby corn is popcorn (see picture below):

2023-2-13

This year I made sure that I knew when exactly to harvest these cuties.  Harvesting should occur just as the cob forms and the corn silk is showing through the top of each ear.  (see unhusked cobs in the basket in the picture below):

unnamed (7)

We had a 3 week drought at the beginning of the growing season so I think the crop yield would have been more abundant in a normal year.  Still, there was enough for me to can 3 jars of baby corn pickles.

unnamed (5)

In a few months I will give them a taste.  And if it's a successful result, then I will share this recipe with you next year!

ENJOY!
