The Burden of Sin

Today we are starting a new series on BURDEN and specifically the burden of sin.

We will begin by defining
Burden - The bearing of a load, typically a heavy one.  Something oppressive or worrisome.

Q:  What are the consequences of sinning?
A:  Ultimately death, eternal condemnation.

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 6:23

Q:  What are the consequences of our sinful actions before we die?
Sins like: theft, gossip, adultery, addiction, hatred, lying.........?
A:  Every sinful action has consequences that affect and change our life now, and it changes and affects the lives of those around us (right now).  Also, after sinning you will be left with guilt that will overwhelm, overpower and engulf your life.

There is a way out of eternal condemnation - believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son and accept God's gift of forgiveness!  This gift is free to us but was paid for by Jesus' blood on the cross - Jesus died, was buried and rose again so that we might have eternal life with Him!

The only way to find "rest for your soul" (see verse above) is through Jesus Christ.  A life lived for Jesus is easy and light compared to a heavy and difficult life full of sin.

Yoke - Something that is regarded as oppressive or burdensome.  Servitude, bondage.

Even after you become a Christian you will continue to struggle with sin but you will now know the answer - you know the difference between right and wrong and you know how to fix it.  Admit your wrong, ask God for forgiveness and right the wrong with whoever your sinful action might have affected.  The verses below show how the struggle with our sinful nature will continue until we receive our heavenly sinless bodies in heaven.

"I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.  For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.  For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.  Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it."
Romans 7:15-20

The ultimate freedom comes from Jesus Christ.  It is through the sacrifice made by God's only Son Jesus: by dying on the cross and taking the punishment for all of our sins so that we ALL might have eternal life.  Guilt and shame weigh us down and make it impossible to truly live and experience FREEDOM.  God's grace and mercy is the only way to true freedom through forgiveness.

FREEDOM - the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.  Liberty, liberation, release, deliverance.

Stand firm, and do not let yourself be burdened again!

I AM FREE THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST MY LORD AND SAVIOR.
