Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #126

Welcome to the 126th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Prayer is the Soul's Sincere Desire" written by James Montgomery (1771-1854) & composed by William A.F. Schulthes (1816-1879).  James Montgomery lost his parents while he was in boarding school (his parents were missionaries in the West Indies).  Like his parents he had very strong beliefs - he protested against slavery, against the work conditions for boys who swept chimneys and also against lotteries.
He had more than 400 hymns published!

I have included 2 videos below the lyrics.  The second version has a different melody and a few extra stanzas.
Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 308 in your hymnals and let's sing:

Prayer Is the Soul's Sincere Desire
written by James Montgomery (1771-1854)
composed by William A.F. Schulthes (1816-1879)

1. Prayer is the soul's sincere desire, Unutter'd or express'd, The motion of a hidden fire That trembles in the breast.

2.   Prayer is the burden of a sigh, The falling of a tear, The upward glancing of an eye When none but God is near.

3.   Prayer is the simplest form of speech That infant lips can try;  Pray'r the sublimest strains that reach The Majesty on high.

4.  O thou, by whom we come to God, The Life, the Truth, the Way, The path of prayer thyself hast trod;  Lord, teach us how to pray.

God's Power Within Us #6 - THE SURPASSING GREATNESS OF HIS POWER

SundayPower6

God's Power Within Us #6 - The Surpassing Greatness of His Power

Today we continue learning about God's Power within us.  God's Word is full of passages talking about His power and showing us that we have nonstop access to His strength every second of every day.

Today we will be focusing on Ephesians 1:17-23

Remember, Jesus said that we (Spirit filled Christians) are able to perform all of the miraculous works that Jesus did when He was here in human form.  Actually, Jesus said that we would do EVEN GREATER than what He did (see Scripture passage below).

SundayPower

John 14:12-14 also shows us how powerful the name of Jesus Christ is:  "If you ask anything in My name".  (It is important to note that these miracles must glorify our Heavenly Father).

Since there are so many wonderful "Power" passages in God's Word, I decided to write a "Power" post on the last Sunday of every month.

Below is the featured "power" passage for February:

Ephesians 1:17-23

In the Bible passage below we learn about wisdom and discernment from God.  Let's begin by defining "discernment":
Discernment - the quality of being able to grasp & comprehend what is obscure.
Knowledge from God is truth and it is powerful.  God's discernment gives us guidance and keeps us safe.
Having our heart "flooded with light" prevents us from being tricked and deceived by the evil ones. (see verses below).

SundayPower6a

Then, in verse 19 (see below) it is clearly states that God's power is IN US and it is also FOR US.  How absolutely amazing!

God's power:
- can NOT be measured
- has NO LIMITS
- goes above & beyond our wildest imagination

And it's this amazing power that is inside of all believers!!

SundayPower6b

In the next two verses (see below) we learn that Jesus Christ's Name is above all names and that's not just for today!  His Name is above all in the future and forever.

"Which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come."
Ephesians 1:20-21

Jesus Christ is the "universal and supreme Head of the church". (see verse below)
Universal - including or covering ALL
Supreme - highest in rank or authority

"And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the church [a headship exercised throughout the church]"
Ephesians 1:22

SundayPower6c

The surpassing greatness of God's power fills EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE!

Triangle Poppy Seed Cookie RECIPE - "Hamantaschen"

Triangle Poppy Seed Cookie RECIPE - "Hamantaschen"

These cute cookies are not one of my own recipes.  All of the other recipes that I share on this blog are either my own creation, or passed down from a family member.

This is a Jewish cookie and it has a very interesting history.  I will explain this history in a different post but it has to do with the book of Esther.

Below, on the right is a picture of this recipe - it was on the inside of the SOLO Poppy Seed can label.  (below the picture is a printable link for this recipe)

I will not be going into the regular detailed description for this recipe (the reason is that SOLO has the instructions in the recipe above).  My pictures follow along with their instructions.

It is important to split the ball of dough into two sections before putting in the fridge.

I double wrapped before placing in the fridge (wax paper and then in ziplock bag)

Be sure to seal the triangle ridges because otherwise it opens up in the oven and does not look as pretty as it should.

The egg wash is also important.

Remove from the cookie sheet and cool on a rack.  Careful - the poppy seeds are VERY hot when first out of the oven.

ENJOY!
