Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #130

Welcome to the 130th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Come to the Savior" written & composed by George F. Root (1820-1895).  George Root was more of a musician than a writer.  At the age of 13 he said that he could play as many instruments as he was years old.  He has a lengthy work history but basically he was a music teacher for many years and then by the mid 1800s he settled in Chicago.  There he established a music publishing business called:  "Root & Cady" - unfortunately this business was destroyed in the Chicago fires of 1871 where he lost about $130,000.  That didn't stop him - he started writing and by the end of his life he had authored 75 books!

Recently we studied from the book of Habakkuk and it seems like the author of this beautiful hymn was quoting from the following passage:

I have included two videos below the lyrics (one is acapella).

Turn with me to number 223 in your hymnals and let's sing:

Come to the Savior
written & composed by George F. Root (1820-1895)

1. Come to the Savior, make no delay;  Here in His word He's sown us the way;  Here in our midst He's standing today, Tenderly sayhing "Come!"

2.   "Suffer the children!" O hear His voice, Let every soul be glad and rejoice, Now will you make Him freely your choice;  Do not delay but come.

3.   Think once again, He's with us today;  Heed now His blest commands and obey;  Hear Him so kindly, tnderly say, "Come now, my child, O come!"

Joyful, joyful will the meeting be.  When from sin our hearts are pure and free;

And we shall gather, Savior, with Thee, In our eternal home.

A special thanks to "Squirrel 24" for sharing this with us!
