Sunflower Disaster - Japanese Beetles, Squirrels & Rose Chafers

Sunflower Disaster

As many of you know, I just love sunflowers and for the past 3 years I have been featuring different sunflower varieties every year (there is a list of these varieties at the end of this post - feel free to click on each link to view the sunflowers).

Well, this year I had a Sunflower Disaster!  Actually the disaster was destructive critters!

Japanese Beetles, Squirrels & Rose Chafers - not to mention late season blight!!

Squirrels - in the picture above you will see how the squirrels chomped the sunflower stalk almost in half !  (the red arrow shows the stalk break & the black arrow shows the shriveled sunflower) (they did this to about 40% of my sunflowers)

Japanese Beetles & Rose Chafers - these bugs are both so destructive.  As you can see by the picture above these insects devoured the leaves only leaving the middle vein of each leaf.  The infestation happened almost overnight!  If I had been able to catch this in time I would have dusted my sunflowers with "Diatomaceous Earth" - but the damage had already been done.  And, now they are also showing signs of Late Season Blight.  It's been a bad year for my Sunflowers but I was able to salvage 2 varieties and I will share those pictures with you in the weeks to come.

Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #23

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.

I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Just As I Am, Without One Plea" written by Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871) & composed by William B. Bradbury (1816-1868).  Charlotte Elliott was such an energetic person until she developed an illness that caused her to become an invalid.  With that prognosis she became depressed and felt as if she was useless until Pastor Dr. Caesar Malan came to visit her and one simple sentence changed her life - he said: "Come to Christ just as you are."  After that visit her outlook on life changed and several years later she wrote this hymn.
