Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #103

Welcome to the 103rd Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go" written by George Matheson (1842-1906) & composed by Albert L. Peace (1814-1912).

This hymn was divinely given almost as if The Holy Spirit wrote it directly through the author.  This is George Matheson describing what happened when he wrote today's featured hymn:
"Something happened to me, which was known only to myself, and which caused me the most severe mental suffering. The hymn was the fruit of that suffering. It was the quickest bit of work I ever did in my life. I had the impression rather of having it dictated to me by some inward voice than of working it out myself.
I am quite sure that the whole work was completed in five minutes, and equally sure it never received at my hands any retouching or correction. I have no natural gift of rhythm. All the other verses I have ever written are manufactured articles; this came like a dayspring from on high. I have never been able to gain once more the same fervor in verse.”.

This is a compilation of posts I did about "LOVE" from 1 Corinthians 13

I have included 2 videos below the lyrics.  The second video has an added chorus but is a perfect addition.  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 361 in your hymnals and let's sing:

O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go
written by George Matheson (1842-1906) & composed by Albert L. Peace (1814-1912)

1. O Love that wilt not let me go, I rest my weary soul in Thee;  I give Thee back the life I owe, That in Thine ocean depths its flow May richer, fuller be.

2.   O Light that followest all my way, I yield my flickering torch to Thee;  My heart restores its borrowed ray, That in Thy sunshine's blaze its day May brighter, fairer be.

3.   O joy that seekest me through pain, I can not close my heart to Thee;  I trace the rainbow through the rain, And feel the promise is not vain That morn shall tearless be.

4.  O Cross that liftest up my head, I dare not ask to fly from Thee;  I lay in dust life's glory dead, And from the ground there blossoms red Life that shall endless be.

Fear NOT Fridays #2 - Fear & the HEART

FearNot

Fear NOT Fridays #2 - Fear & the HEART

I once heard a preacher say that "do not be afraid" occurs 365 times in the Bible.  That's enough for every day of the year, which means that we should never live in fear.  I have not yet confirmed that amount of "fear nots" but that sermon inspired this new series:
Fear NOT Fridays.

Once or twice a month I will feature a Bible verse or passage from God's Word proving that we should NOT be afraid.

I do want to clarify one thing before continuing - "fear God" is NOT the same as being afraid.  When it says "fear God" in the Bible that means showing reverence, respect and absolute awe of our Heavenly Father.  Whereas, fear means - a very unpleasant or disturbing feeling caused by the presence or imminence of danger.

We learn in Ephesians 6:12 (see below) that we, as Christians, are fighting a spiritual battle everyday.  What if the entire world is currently in an information war? - a war of the mind?  We are constantly being bombarded with things that we should fear, like the current illness/virus or the impending winter storm with dangerous ice.  FEAR, Fear, fear on social media, television, computers, smartphones - fear is being broadcast everywhere and all the time.  Again, near the end of the verse below we see that our struggle is against the evil forces in the heavenly realms.  Well, our fear is what those evil forces feed on - we are making them fat by being afraid.  That is why this series will help us rid our lives of fear and thereby starve the evil of this world.

Featured verse:  John 14:27

FearNot2

How does fear affect the heart?
(Disclaimer - I am NOT a doctor and I am NOT giving medical advice or any advice of any kind.  The information below came from my online research.)
When we are afraid our heart responds in 3 ways:
1.  A quickened heartbeat
2.  An increase in pulse rate & increased blood pressure
3.  A change in breathing patterns (shortness of breath or rapid breathing)

When we study the featured Bible passage we see that Jesus said that we should not allow our HEART to be troubled or afraid.  Jesus left us His PEACE through The Holy Spirit.  Since the Holy Spirit is inside us all the time, that means His peace is always there to draw from.  There will always be situations that will scare us but when we learn how to draw peace from God within, then that access will never go away!

22 Treasures - CHOCOLATE

TreasuresCHOCOLATE

22 Treasures - CHOCOLATE

Today is the second of February in the year twenty twenty-two.  The number 2 is an interesting number.  There is no other number that I can think of that has the same result when it is added to itself and multiplied by itself [I am not a mathematician so I could be wrong.  And, I am not including zero because zero is nothing (literally nothing 0 + 0 = 0 and 0 x 0 = 0)]:
2 + 2 = 4
2 x 2 = 4
Four is the same answer whether 2 is added or multiplied by itself.

Also, on the twentieth of this month it will be a palindromic date (read the same forward and backward):
2/20/2022

With that being said, since 22 (2 and 2) are so unique, I thought I'd start a new series during the year 2022 called:
22 Treasures
In this series I will pick a topic (like - CHOCOLATE) and I will feature 22 treasured blog posts from this blog about that topic.  And, that topic will be split into 4 different categories.

Today we are featuring CHOCOLATE in these 4 categories:
Cookies
Cake
Breads
Other Desserts
