The Toledo Zoo - Feature#11 & Name That PLANT

The Toledo Zoo - Feature #11 & Name That PLANT

The Toledo Zoo in Toledo, Ohio has been voted one of the top 10 Zoos in the country!  I have lived in this area for 20 years and this past September 2015 is the first time that I have ever visited this special place.  Now I am asking myself: "Why did it take me so long?".

I had the pleasure of visiting the zoo with my sister & brother-in-law and my precious twin nieces.  It was such a blessing to experience this amazing zoo with my 10 year old nieces.

Each week I will feature one animal and one plant (asking for your help in identifying some of the plants) - ENJOY!

Feature #11 - TIGER

I have always been fascinated with the tiger & actually this was my favorite animal at the Toledo Zoo.  Tigers were once native to Asia, Turkey and Russia - now they only range from the southeastern part of Asia & Siberia.  Only 6 tiger subspecies still exist and they are all endangered.  Tigers are the largest cat species classified in the genus "Panthera."

I went to the zoo to look at animals but found myself mostly taking pictures of plants.

Many of the plants around the zoo exhibits and buildings I had never seen before (and unfortunately they were not labeled), so I decided to include a section asking for your help.  The featured plant today is also my favorite plant that I saw during this visit to the zoo.  It has multi-colored berries - just stunning!  However, I haven't a single clue about the name of this plant.

Obedience Series #7 - Obeying Authority

Obeying Authority

I always like to begin with the basics - what is the meaning of "authority"?
Authority - the power or right to give orders, make decisions and enforce obedience. (Merriam-Webster).

That definition covers a large amount of people:  our parents and other family members, priests/pastors or other church elders, teachers, bosses, police and other people working in law enforcement, those in government positions and so on and so forth.


All of these people and positions come with major responsibility and stress.  Look at the passage from Hebrews above - "They keep watch over you as men who must give an account.  Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden."  I'm sure we can all think about some leader from our past who was absolutely miserable.  Maybe it was because everyone under his/her command defied and challenged their every request? 

Let's make sure that we obey our leaders in every step of our Christian walk. 


What happens when those in authority ask you to go against God's law? - That is a question for another post.

I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to Cathy from A Peek Into My Paradise for more than 2 years of Climbing with us as the week#3 permanent cohost. You will be greatly missed Cathy! (Cathy is moving onto bigger and better things)

  There will be no CLIMB this month  - we are regrouping to make the CLIMB even more spectacular in 2016.  The CLIMB will resume in February 2016.

Chocolate Orange Lindt Lava Cake

Chocolate Orange Lindt Lava Cake

If you have been a follower of this blog for any amount of time then you will most likely know that the chocolate and orange combination is one of my most favorite flavor combinations.


 

Printable Recipe

3 eggs
6 orange Lindt Truffles (wrapping removed)

1/4 cup milk

1/4 cup butter

1/2 cup cocoa powder (unsweetened)

1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour

1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon orange rind
1 tablespoon orange juice (freshly squeezed is preferred)

powdered sugar for dusting

(4 ramekins - sprayed or buttered & dusted with flour)

Begin by melting the butter and then once melted, remove from heat and add 2 Lindt truffles - stirring all the time until the truffles melt (It is very IMPORTANT not to burn the chocolate!!!) set aside to cool to lukewarm.  In a large bowl - mix together the milk, eggs & sugar (you may use a whisk but do not whip until frothy).  Now the butter/truffle mixture should be cooled - add that into the egg/sugar mixture & stir until combined.  Add the orange juice & stir.  Now, add in the flour, orange rind & cocoa and stir with a wooden spoon until fully blended.  Pour equal amounts into the Ramekins (which should already have been sprayed).  Now place 1 truffle in the middle of each batter filled ramekin.  Press the truffle down until the batter covers the top of the truffle (see pictures above).
(IMPORTANT NOTE:  The success of this dessert depends on the size of the ramekin - if you are using a wider more shallow ramekin then the truffle will not be covered with cake batter & therefore will not work)

Bake in a preheated 450 degree oven for 9 to 14 minutes (NOTE:  Every oven is different - if you are making this for the first time I would bake 1 Ramekin first & then test to make sure the "lava" is flowing inside.  The perfect time for my oven is 10.5 minutes).  Remove the Ramekins from the oven & place on a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes.  While they are cooling - take a knife and gently run around the edges. 




After 15 (plus) minutes - invert each Lava Cake on a plate & then dust with powdered sugar. 

Serve immediately & Enjoy A DIVINE DESSERT!
(NOTE - If you allow the cake to cool completely - it will still be delicious but the inner part will harden back to the creamy truffle middle instead of the flowing lava decadence)
