Biblical Anatomy #16 - BONES

Biblical Anatomy #16 - BONES
Today we continue studying in the series called "Biblical Anatomy."

Anatomy - is the study of parts and structures of organisms.

What is "Biblical Anatomy" you might ask?  It is the study of the structure of the Christian Body (The Christian family/church).

Today we focus on BONES:

Bones- the rigid substance that forms the skeleton, composed mostly of calcium salts.

3 Types of BONE Tissue:

1.  Compact Tissue - the harder, outer part of bones
2.  Cancellous Tissue - the inner sponge-like part of bones
3.  Subchondral tissue - the smooth end part of bones which is covered by cartilage

Function of the Bone:

Provides shape and support for the body, and protects some organs.  Bones also store minerals.
I learned that the bone marrow is actually part of the lymph system.

In the Bible, the first time we hear about a bone/bones is in Genesis when God made Eve out of one of Adam's ribs.
Bones are the foundational structure on which (and in which) everything else was created/formed/designed.  Just like our body, the church family needs to have a strong foundational skeleton in order to continue through life's hardships.

In the New Testament, we are reminded of the reference to Jesus' bones as He hang on the cross.  This was used as confirmation - Jesus' legs NOT being broken proved what was said in the Old Testament:

"Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.  Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.  But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.  But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.  And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.  For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.”  And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
John 19:31-37

In Psalm 22 "bones" are mentioned numerous times but I am going to save this passage for my "Bible Version Discrepancy" series because I am shocked at the version differences within these verses.

This final passage is so wonderful that I could have used this entire post to study Ezekiel 37.  When I was a young child, my father used to recite this song/poem about how the bones connected.  I had no idea that this song came from Ezekiel 37!!! (at the end of this post I have included 2 videos of this fun song).

I believe that these "dry bones" symbolize us right now - that "We the People" are waking up.  Have you ever noticed people walking around like they are zombies - no compassion for their fellow man/woman, oblivious to how corrupt and evil governments and societies have become?  Well, we are now waking up to the truth and realizing that "they" have been feeding us lies all of our life!  We were just like dried bones but now we are an "exceedingly great army" - God's army!!!
