Psalm 119 - NUN (Hebrew Alphabet)

NUN - Psalm 119: 105-112

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible, you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we continue studying with the fourteenth letter
NUN.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.
Example below.

NUN - No darkness - Your Word is a light Unto my path like Noonday sunshine.

In the verse above there are 2 words that are rarely used in our society:
statutes & heritage.

Statute - a law enacted by God

Heritage - property that descends to an heir.  Legacy, inheritance

When we make God's law the focus and joy of our heart, then our inheritance is eternal life in heaven!  Of course, we are saved by God's grace and mercy through Jesus Christ His Son but when we accept this free gift our natural response is a desire to follow God's laws.

You see, God's laws protect us:

When we suffer - God renews (verse 107)

When we falter  - we remember God's plan" (verse 109)

When the wicked set a trap for us - we continue on God's path instead (verse 110)

There is another word rarely used in the verse below:  decrees.

Decree - to command or direct by authoritative order

If you believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior, then you know that when your earthly life ends - your eternal life in heaven will just be starting.  Let's keep God's decrees to the very end of our earthly life!

  1. This is SO good, and I love Psalm 119. I memorized the first 16 verses long ago, and I guess it's time for a review, because those truths of enthusiastic LOVE for God's Word are so inspiring.
