The Insect That Prays
I'm not one of those people who is fascinated by bugs. Actually, most of the time I'm "creeped out" by many insects. However, the praying mantis is totally cool! If you've never seen one in person then you are probably thinking that I am strange. The praying mantis is so named because it appears to be in a praying stance, holding it's "hands" together in reverence to God.
There are times when the praying mantis appears to be looking straight at you (see picture below):
Besides encouraging me to pray, this insect is also very beneficial to have in the garden (mostly anyway). This bug eats many of the pest bugs that we gardeners are always trying to destroy.
Some examples of pest bugs that praying mantis eat:
- spiders
- crickets
- grasshoppers
- mosquitoes
- cockroaches
The only problem is that praying mantis also eat beneficial bugs like bees and ladybugs.
(In the next two pictures below, it almost looks like this mantis is currently eating a pest bug):
Like I said earlier - I'm reminded how important prayer is when I look at a praying mantis. Prayer is probably the most important "spiritual weapon".

If you happen to see a nest that resembles the two pictures below - then you might want to consider not destroying these little bundles. These are the Praying Mantis nests that can contain around 300 eggs.
On a fun note - I used to grow and create art out of gourds. Below is the church in "Gourdons of Gourdonville". The roof lifts off and inside a clay Praying Mantis is kneeling in birch bark pews:
ENJOY!
