GIMEL - Psalm 119:17-24

The longest chapter in the Bible is Psalm 119.  If you turn to Psalm 119 in your Bible you will notice that there is a strange word every 8 verses.  These "strange" words are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.  David wrote this chapter in an acrostic pattern and every letter of the alphabet is followed by 8 verses.  It is a chapter full of praise and worship.  I thought it would be fun to study Psalm 119 by summarizing each alphabetic section in an acrostic format.

I did not know anything about the Hebrew language, so I did a little research.  The Hebrew language is written from the right to the left - opposite of the English language.  There are 22 letters to the Hebrew alphabet.  Today we continue studying with the third letter GIMEL.
I am also NOT a poet, so I had to research what an acrostic pattern meant.
An Acrostic Poem - is a poem where certain letters in each line spell out a word or phrase.
Example below.

GIMEL - Give me Insight;  open my eyes to learn Your Law.

Last week we focused on memorizing Scripture but what's the point of memorizing any Bible verse if you don't understand the meaning?  Our focus today is on "Insight." It's a word not used often in everyday life, so let's take the time to define this word (taken from various online dictionaries):
Insight - the act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or seeing intuitively.  Discernment, perception, perceptiveness, wisdom.

This kind of "insight" comes from God.  Knowing Bible verses inside and out and being able to recite them in applicable situations.  Maybe not even reciting the verses word for word but applying the meaning to our actions and our everyday life.  This is the ultimate proof that the meaning of Scripture read has been understood - by putting God's Word into action.

This is why I recommend praying to God before you read the Bible - ask Him for understanding - ask Him to show you what He wants you to learn.

The word that jumped out at me in the verse above is "consume" - I thought it would be interesting to define that word also:
Consume - to enjoy avidly, to engage fully, to devour.

Let us devour God's Word everyday of our life!
