Worship Wednesdays - FREEDOM

Worship Wednesdays - FREEDOM

I thought it fitting to start this new series called "Worship Wednesdays" on Independence Day;  the day when we celebrate the beginning of this great country and when we are thankful for the many freedoms given to us.  In this series I will focus on one word, thought or lesson and I will feature a modern Christian song that relates to the focus of the day.

Let's begin by defining WORSHIP - the feeling or expression of adoration for a deity.  Adoration, love, devotion, adulation, glorify, exalt, praise.

There are many ways to worship God but in this series it will be through music.

“Seven times a day I praise you.”

Psalm 119:164

FREEDOM - the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.  Liberty, liberation, release, deliverance.

The ultimate freedom comes from Jesus Christ.  It is through the sacrifice made by God's only Son Jesus: by dying on the cross and taking the punishment for all of our sins so that we ALL might have eternal life.  Guilt and shame weigh us down and make it impossible to truly live and experience FREEDOM.  God's grace and mercy is the only way to true freedom through forgiveness.
I AM FREE THROUGH THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST MY LORD AND SAVIOR.

A special thanks to "laurendaiglemusic" for sharing this with us on YouTube

Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing #65

Welcome to the 65th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.

I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "My Times Are In Thy Hand" written by William F. Lloyd (1791-1853)   & composed by George Kingsley (1811-1884).
I couldn't find much information about this author.  William F. Lloyd was a teacher and dedicated to Sunday school work.  He taught at Oxford and was engaged in the "Religious Tract Society" in 1816.  He wrote many practical books for Sunday school teachers.

"But I trust in you, Lord;  I say, 'You are my God.'  My times are in your hands;  deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me."
Psalm 31:14-15

I have included 2 versions of this beautiful hymn (below the lyrics).  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 402 in your hymnals and let's sing:

My Times Are in Thy Hand

written by William F. Lloyd (1791-1853) & composed by George Kingsley (1811-1884)

1. My times are in Thy hand;  My God, I wish them there;  My life, my friends, my soul, I leave Entirely to Thy care.

2.   My times are in Thy hand;  Whatever they may be;  Pleasing or painful, dark or bright, As best may seem to Thee.

3.  My times are in Thy hand; Why should I doubt or fear?  My Father's hand will never cause His child a needless tear.

4.  My times are in Thy hand;  I'll always trust in Thee;  And, after death, at Thy right hand I shall for ever be.
