Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #53

Welcome to the 53rd Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Stepping in the Light" written by Eliza E. Hewitt (1851-1920) & Composed by William J. Kirkpatrick (1838-1921).
Eliza Hewitt was a school teacher until she became bedridden due to a painful spine issue.  It was from her bed that she wrote this lovely hymn.

"But if we walk in the light, as he is the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."  1 John 1:7

I have included 2 versions of this great hymn (below the lyrics).  The first YouTube video is traditional and the second video has more of a folk or country sound.  Please enjoy listening to both of these versions!

Turn with me to number 270 in your hymnals and let's sing:

Stepping in the Light
written by Eliza E. Hewitt (1851-1920) composed by William J. Kirkpatrick (1838-1921)

1. Trying to walk in the steps of the Savior, Trying to follow our Savior and King;  Shaping our lives by His blessed example, Happy, how happy, the songs that we bring.

2.   Pressing more closely to Him who is leading, When we are tempted to turn from the way;  Trusting the arm that is strong to defend us, Happy, how happy, our praises each day.

3.   Walking in footsteps of gentle forbearance, Footsteps of faithfulness, mercy and love;  Looking to Him for the grace feely promised, Happy, how happy, our journey above!

4.   Trying to walk in the steps of the Savior, Upward still upward we'll follow our Guide;  When we shall see Him, "the King in His beauty," Happy, how happy, our place at His side!

How beautiful to walk in the steps of the Savior, Stepping in the light, Stepping in the light; How beautiful to walk in the steps of the Savior, Led in paths of light!

A special thanks to "Kimberly Cruz" for sharing this with us!
