Rooting Globes & the "Vick's" Plant

Rooting Globes & the "Vick's" Plant

These rooting globes are not only beautiful but also practical.  They are perfect for rooting herbs, berries and other plants.

A few years ago I showed how easy it is to start your own Goji berry plants (although, I did not have these exact rooting globes then).

The reason that these rooting glasses are shaped strangely (see picture below) with a round bottom is so that the end of the plant cutting is suspended in water, thereby giving the roots room to grow.

Plants can NOT grow in these globes permanently - they will need to be transplanted into soil (in a pot or outside in the garden).  As you can see in the picture below, the globe on the far right has a plant starting to turn off color because I let it stay too long in the water (I will transplant it into soil).

The "Vick's" Plant

I have been growing this herb as an indoor plant for many decades.  The cuttings seen in this post are from a 20 year old plant.  The reason that it is called a "Vick's" plant is because the leaves really do smell like the "Vick's VapoRub" used to help with lung congestion.

It is an aromatic medicinal herb used to help with lung/breathing issues (I am not a doctor - see my disclaimer link at the end of this post).  The steam from boiling these leaves will open up your airways wonderfully (similar to the "Vick's VapoRub").

I was always under the impression that this herb can NOT be eaten, however, I recently read that it is safe for humans but can cause intestinal upset for dogs and cats (so keep away from your animal family members).

The texture of these leaves are so soft and feel almost like velvet (you can see that the leaves almost look furry in the pictures above and below).

ENJOY!
