Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #68

Welcome to the 68th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "The Haven of Rest" written by H.L. Gilmour (1836-1920)  & composed by George D. Moore (1800-1900).
Today's featured author was a "Jack of all Trades" - These many talents began when he was 16 years old in Ireland by learning how to navigate on the open seas.  He sailed and landed in Philadelphia, PA where he decided to stay and emigrated to the United States.  He then became a painter (not an artist but painting buildings), a Union soldier in the Civil War, a dentist and finally a gospel musician.  He wrote Haven of Rest in 1889.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28

I have included 2 versions of this beautiful hymn (below the lyrics).  The second version seems to be a casual choir practice but it has wonderful acoustics.  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 224 in your hymnals and let's sing:

The Haven of Rest
written by H.L. Gilmour (1836-1920) & composed by George D. Moore (1800-1900)

1. My soul in sad exile was out on life's sea, So burdened with sin and distressed.  Till I heard a sweet voice saying "Make me your choice."  And I entered the "Haven of Rest!"
 CHORUS

2.   I yielded my self to His tender embrace, And faith taking hold of the Word, My fetters fell off, and I anchored my soul;  The "Haven of Rest" is my Lord.
 CHORUS

3.   The song of my soul, since the Lord made me whole, Has been the old story so blessed.  Of Jesus, who'll save whosoever will have A home in the "Haven of Rest"
 CHORUS

4.   O come to the Savior, He patiently waits To save by His power divine;  Come, anchor your soul in the "Haven of Rest", And say "My Beloved is mine."
  CHORUS

Chorus

I've anchored my soul in the "Haven of Rest,"  I'll sail the wide seas no more;  Tho tempest may sweep o'er the wild, stormy deep.  In Jesus I'm safe evermore.

A special thanks to "West Creek Harmony" for sharing this with us!

Fun Fridays #22 - "Rubik's Cube Halloween"

Fun Fridays #22 - Rubik's Cube Halloween
Happiness and laughter are so good for our health!
"A happy heart makes the face cheerful" Proverbs 15:13
(click HERE to read the health benefits of laughter)

This is a series called:  "Fun Fridays".  On the first Friday of every month I will share with you an old photo or something from the recent past that made me happy;  in hopes that it will at least make you smile 😊

by Angie Ouellette-Tower for https://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/ photo IMG_0006_zpsvvydagd7.jpg
In the 1980's I was obsessed with all things Rubik's Cube.  I had every kind of cube type puzzle available at that time - a diamond shaped puzzle and even a world globe cube (I was able to solve all of them at that time.  I'd be afraid to try today due to aging brain cells - lol).  I am (obviously) the Rubik's Cube in the picture above posing with my little sister and her friend.  This is a very easy costume for children to make by themselves!
ENJOY!
