100 Years of Christmas Music - 1970's

Music has always been a vital part of my Christmas celebrations, even since I was a child and into my adulthood.  During my childhood my family started out with a small radio that my parents placed on the fireplace mantel but then years later that was replaced with a surround sound stereo.  However, the real music that stands out in my memory was from Christmas Eve candle light services hearing the German Baptist choir harmonizing the songs of the season.

Even more precious than the choir music that I have memorialized in my heart occurred around the Advent Wreath during our
"Advent Family Worship" (click HERE to read).

In this series I will feature Christmas songs from each decade over the past 100 years.
We just finished featuring songs from the 60's (click HERE to view 1960's)
Today we continue our musical study with the "1970's."
The Seventies was a decade of economic downturn.  This was the first major economic decline since the post-war boom that lasted into the late 1960's.  The Cold War continued throughout this decade and the Vietnam War finally ended in 1975.  The Munich Massacre (Terrorist attack at the Summer Olympics) occurred in 1972.  It was a decade of worldwide crises - first the 1973 oil crisis and then the 1979 energy crisis.  In 1974 the Watergate Scandal  -  President Richard Nixon resigned.  There were huge advances in technology during the 70's - birth of the modern computer with floppy disks in 1971; the Xerox Alto (the first desktop computer) in 1973;  the first email transmission in 1971 and The Apple Computer Company was established in 1976.  Also, fiber-optics, microwave ovens, VCRs and voicemail systems all became available in the 70's.
Many more Children's Christmas Classics (cartoons and Claymation) movies were created during this decade:  Claymation continued with "Santa Claus is Comin' To Town", "Nestor, the Long-eared Christmas Donkey" and "The Year Without Santa Claus."  Many treasured animated Christmas specials like "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and "Bugs Bunny's Christmas Carol."  And other specials like: "John Denver and the Muppets - A Christmas Gathering" or "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street."

Below is an excerpt from The Bugs Bunny Christmas Carol special from 1979:
