7 Covenants - #6 Davidic
This is the sixth of seven very important covenants in the Bible. Most Christians can only name a couple (before doing my research I have to admit that I could only think of 4), and many other people only focus on one covenant from the Old Testament as being the "ultimate" covenant.
We will be studying each covenant in detail.
The sixth covenant is the Davidic.
Just to be very clear, we will again begin by defining the word:
Covenant - a solemn, binding agreement established by God with individuals or groups. It involves promises, blessings and stipulations that underscore the relationship between God and His people.
And then let's define two words from the definition of covenant above: solemn & binding.
Solemn- very serious; done with the utmost sincerity
Binding- imposing an obligation
This covenant is between God and David.
Remember "David & Goliath"? This is that David. Let's refresh our memories about how David took down that giant Goliath (it's really worth reading the entire 17th chapter of 1 Samuel, but here are some excerpts):
Notice that David gave God all of the glory! David said "I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel." And God used the smallest, most insignificant weapon (a stone) to totally defeat a giant. God made this covenant with David because David stood up for God and trusted Him in that battle.
Here is God's promise to David:
Of course we know that this "offspring" of David's is Jesus Christ, and it is His (Jesus') kingdom that will endure forever and ever.
That truth is made clearer in the Bible passage below:
Each covenant builds on each other and they will all culminate with the final covenant that we will study next week.
