Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #79

Welcome to the 79th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.

I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "Come Unto Me, Ye Weary" written by William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898).
Today's featured author was a businessman - a manager of a marine insurance company in Scotland.  He published various volumes of hymns.

"The Burden of Sin"

I have included 2 versions of this lovely hymn (below the lyrics).  The first version is traditional and the second version changed the tune and a few of the lyrics but it is lovely.  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 215 in your hymnals and let's sing:

Come Unto Me, Ye Weary

written by William C. Dix (1837-1989)  & composed by Welsh hymn melody

1. Come unto me, ye weary, And I will give you rest.  O blessed voice of Jesus, Which comes to hearts oppressed!  It tells of benediction, Of pardon, grace and peace, Of joy that hath no ending.  Of love which cannot cease.

2.   Come unto me, ye fainting.  And I will give you life.  O cheering voice of Jesus, Which comes to aid our strife!  The foe is stern and eager, The fight is fierce and long;  But Thou hast made us mighty, And stringer than the strong.

3.   And who soever cometh, I will not cast him out.  O welcome voice of Jesus, Which drives away our doubt!  Which calls us, very sinners, Unworthy though we be Of love so free and boundless, To come, dear Lord, to Thee!

A special thanks to "First Presbyterian Church Perkasie PA" for sharing this with us!

A special thanks to "Hallowell - Topic" for sharing this with us!

Other Hymns on this blog:

Peace, Perfect Peace

Sound the Battle Cry
My Redeemer
O For a Closer Walk With Thee
He Keeps Me Singing
Open My Eyes That I May See
He Is Able To Deliver Thee
Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy
I Know Whom I Have Believed
His Way With Thee
The Haven of Rest

Fun Fridays #33 - Non-Scary Happy Halloween

Fun Fridays #33 - Non-Scary Happy Halloween
Happiness and laughter are so good for our health!
"A happy heart makes the face cheerful" Proverbs 15:13
(click HERE to read the health benefits of laughter)

This is a series called:  "Fun Fridays".  On the first Friday of every month I will share with you an old photo or something from the recent past that made me happy;  in hopes that it will at least make you smile 😊

I never felt afraid or offended during my "Trick-or-Treating" years.  Today, even childhood "fun" like Halloween costumes are filled with gory, evil and bloody details......or the costumes are totally political.  I remember always having fun and feeling safe - never needing to make a point with my costumes (and my parents also NEVER dressed us in offensive attire).  That's me in the picture above - dressed as a princess.  (This picture - circa 1974)
ENJOY!
