22 Treasures - PRESERVING

TreasuresPRESERVING

22 Treasures - PRESERVING

In February of this year there were two palindromic dates: 2/20/2022 & 2/22/22 (palindromic meaning it is the same from left to right or from right to left - 2202022 & 22222).  The number 2 is an interesting number.  There is no other number that I can think of that has the same result when it is added to itself and multiplied by itself [I am not a mathematician, so I could be wrong.  And, I am not including zero because zero is nothing (literally nothing 0 + 0 = 0 and 0 x 0 = 0)]:
2 + 2 = 4
2 x 2 = 4
Four is the same answer whether 2 is added or multiplied by itself.

With that being said, since 22 (2 and 2) are so unique, I thought I'd continue posting in this series during the year 2022 called:
22 Treasures
In this series I will pick a topic (like - PRESERVING) and I will feature 22 treasured blog posts from this blog about that topic.  And, that topic will be split into 4 different categories.

Today I am featuring PRESERVING in these 4 categories:
Canning
Drying
Freezing
RECIPES Using Preserved Food

Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing #109

Welcome to the 109th Old Fashioned Sunday Hymn Sing!

I miss the old hymns that I remember from my childhood - there were no drums, no electric guitar and no mind numbing beat. It was just voices and maybe a piano or an organ. The choir led the congregation in singing - and the words of these hymns are poetic. I realize that there is a need for the modern "seeker oriented" worship music - but it is also necessary to have deeper songs (no offense intended to anyone who prefers the newer church songs).

I decided to have an "Old Fashion Sunday Hymn Sing" once a month on this blog.
I personally do NOT have a great singing voice - I used to play the guitar & piano but my voice is NOT an instrument. That's the great thing about this digital hymn sing, you can warble along without being embarrassed or without offending anyone else.

The hymns that we will be studying are taken from an old hymnal from a Baptist church that is no longer in existence - "The North American Hymnal" published in 1956 by "THE ROGER WILLIAMS PRESS"

I will also try to find a version of the featured hymn on "YouTube" to share with you each month.

Today's featured hymn is "O Holy Spirit, Enter In" written by Michael Schirmer (1606-1673) & translated by Catherine Winkworth (1829-1878) & composed by Phillip Nicolai (1556-1608).

The original poem/hymn was German "WIE SCHÖN LEUCHTET" (Which literally means: How Beautifully Shines.  Michael Schirmer was actually Michael Schirmer Jr.  - His father was an inspector of wine casks.  Michael Jr. graduated from the University of Leipzig.  He had a difficult life - he lost his wife and two children (I couldn't find what happened) and then Michael Jr. became very depressed for 5 years.  He was a poet and his first published work was in 1650.

“Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.  Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him;  but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come."
Matthew 12:31-32

I have included 2 videos below the lyrics.  The second video is modern with a different tune and a few changed verses.  Enjoy!

Turn with me to number 204 in your hymnals and let's sing:

O Holy Spirit, Enter In
written by Michael Schirmer (1606-1673) & translated by Catherine Winkworth (1829-1878)
composed by Phillipp Nicolai (1556-1608)

1. O Holy Spirit, enter in And in our hearts Thy work begin, Thy temple design to make us;  Sun of the soul, Thou Light Divine, Around and in us brightly shine.  To joy and gladness wake us That we, In Thee Truly living, To Thee giving Prayer unceasing May in love be still increasing.

2.   Give to Thy Word impressive pow'r  That in our hearts from this good hour, As fire it may be glowing;  That we confess the Father, Son, And Thee, the Spirit.  Three in One, They glory ever showing.  Stay Thou, Guide now Our souls ever That they never May forsake Thee.  But by faith their refuge make Thee.

3.   O gentle Dew, from heaven now fall With power upon the hearts of all, They tender love instilling.  That heart to heart more closely bound, In kindly deeds be fruitful found, The law of love fulfilling.  Dwell thus In us;  Envy banish;  Strife will vanish Where Thou livest.  Peace and love and joy Thou givest.

FearNOT Fridays #8 - Held In God's Hand

FearNot

Fear NOT Fridays #8 - Held In God's Hand

I once heard a preacher say that "do not be afraid" occurs 365 times in the Bible.  That's enough for every day of the year, which means that we should never live in fear.  I have not yet confirmed that amount of "fear nots" but that sermon inspired this series:
Fear NOT Fridays.

Once or twice a month I will feature a Bible verse or passage from God's Word proving that we should NOT be afraid.

I do want to clarify one thing before continuing - "fear God" is NOT the same as being afraid.  When it says "fear God" in the Bible that means showing reverence, respect and absolute awe of our Heavenly Father.  Whereas, fear means - a very unpleasant or disturbing feeling caused by the presence or imminence of danger.

We learn in Ephesians 6:12 (see below) that we, as Christians, are fighting a spiritual battle everyday.  What if the entire world is currently in an information war? - a war of the mind?  We are constantly being bombarded with things that we should fear, like the current illness/virus or an impending nuclear war.  FEAR, Fear, fear on social media, television, computers, smartphones - fear is being broadcast everywhere and all the time.  Again, near the end of the verse below we see that our struggle is against the evil forces in the heavenly realms.  Well, our fear is what those evil forces feed on - we are making them fat by being afraid.  That is why this series will help us rid our lives of fear and thereby starve the evil of this world.

Featured passage:  Isaiah 41:10

FearNot8

Let's begin by defining the word
"dismayed" - experiencing or showing feelings of alarmed concern;  upset, worried, agitated.

I chose the above picture because that is how I think about this verse.  Our Heavenly Father holding us in his hand is precious and personal.  Just like that infant, we have nothing to fear - God will help us and strengthen us - upholding us every second of every day.
And, most importantly, focus on the sentence after "Fear not":
"I am with you"
That means we are NEVER alone - God is ALWAYS with us.
